Considering Māori

Understanding New Zealand’s infrastructure pipeline and the construction sector’s capacity and capability to deliver it is inherently complex. Forecasting demand and supply is challenging in itself; accounting for shocks, disruptions, and systemic stresses makes it even more so. This is precisely the challenge CanConstructNZ is designed to address.

Beyond technical modelling, the initiative recognises that infrastructure decisions are embedded in a broader social and cultural context. As Professor Potangaroa highlights, any meaningful analysis must also consider the interrelationship between construction activity and te ao Māori. CanConstructNZ therefore remains attentive to the broader implications of sector dynamics, including their impact on Māori communities, land, and livelihoods.

It will be very tricky to understand the pipeline of projects and the capacity and capability of the sector, and to make predictions of specific demand and supply inquiries. It will be even more difficult to allow for shocks and stresses that may affect either side of the equation, yet all of these are what CanConstructNZ will do.
